about

We wrote this song together on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and it ended up being the last song we added to the album. We love the joy of the arrangement and the many different ways in which the lyrics can be interpreted -- though no, it is not about any particular Sarah. ;)

lyrics

kids born in 2000 are legal
and no one went out to see the sequel
and I keep running into the people
that I used to know
nobody remembers the beatles
and everything turned out to be evil
and I'm stuck in the eye of a needle
everywhere I go

go home, sarah
don't you know, sarah
you can't stay here
spend everyday here

it's 7:55 on a Friday
I'm going 25 on the highway
cause if I leave I'm doing it my way
and you'll all say don't

don't go, sarah
please come home, sarah
you can stay here
spend every day here
don't go, sarah
no we won't share ya
please just stay here
spend the rest of your days here

sarah's growing older but not taller lately
going crazy
sarah's getting colder and she told me,
"baby, won't you save me?"

don't go sarah,
please come home, sarah
you can stay here
spend every day here

don't go, sarah!
please come home, sarah
you can stay here
spend the rest of your days here

she won't come down
she can't be free
she won't tell anyone except for me
she walks around
and can't believe
her hometown won't become a fantasy

she won't come down
she can't be free
she won't tell anyone except for me
she walks around
and can't believe
she's not anyone she used to be.
